Cindy Cerone

"Holy Name didn't skip a beat with my care during the pandemic. They made me feel like I was the only patient they had."

Cindy was no stranger to Holy Name before the pandemic.

After being misdiagnosed in 2015, she was referred to Dr. Sharyn Lewin, the Medical Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Holy Name. Dr. Lewin, an expert in gynecologic cancers, correctly diagnosed and treated Cindy's rare form of vulvar cancer. Cindy's cancer went into remission and she went on with her life.

Surprisingly, her cancer came back in 2019, despite having a very low chance of recurrence. It was caught early, however, and Dr. Lewin treated it. Cindy was back in remission.

Dr. Lewin's team..."They feel like family."

She was enjoying life when a few months later, the pandemic hit. Cindy knew her immune system had been compromised for a while so she was extra cautious, socially distancing, getting her groceries delivered, and only seeing friends through video calls. She even wore a mask to take the trash out from her suburban home.

Yet, she felt safe going to Holy Name. She trusted the COVID protocols implemented at the hospital and kept her nearly two dozen follow-up appointments. In fact, at times, she came in without an appointment, just to drop off lunches for Dr. Lewin's tireless team.

"They feel like family," Cindy said. "They're all very compassionate, kind people. And, with the pandemic, I wanted to do something for them."

It was during one of these lunch drop-offs that she mentioned to a nurse that something felt off. Following Holy Name's approach to treating every patient with expertise and compassion, the nurse immediately brought Cindy into an exam room. Even during the pandemic.

Cindy is still grateful to that nurse - because of her listening to Cindy's gut feeling, they found her cancer had recurred. Again.

Cindy is still grateful to that nurse; because she listened to Cindy's gut feeling, they found her cancer had recurred. Again.

Immediately, Dr. Lewin and her team created a new treatment plan. After five radiation treatments, Cindy's cancer was undetectable.

Cindy said she's incredibly grateful for the advanced, meticulous care she's received from Holy Name and credits them with saving her life.

"Holy Name didn't skip a beat with my care during the pandemic," Cindy said. "They made me feel like I was the only patient they had."
